There are currently 950 artists listed on wotartist. This is an important milestone on our journey through cyberspace and we are well on the way to our first year target of 1000. Ideally we would like to present the work of up to 5000 artists as an ultimate goal, but whatever number we reach from now on does invite a debate as to how big wotartist should become before, the effort involved out ways the benefits of further growth. From the beginning we considered the pros and cons of automating the listing of artists and concluded rightly, as has been proved to be correct, that a human edited directory would be superior.

To control the choice of image that we display is of utmost priority to us in our determination to provide the visitor with the most varied and interesting gallery of work possible. To engage with our artists personally is important, to invite confidence in us as a website and to monitor closely the listed websites for their actual state or broadcast on the Internet.

So often is the case that one pays a visit to an automated directory, only to find every second link to be a dead end link and a mish-mash of work by artists of contrasting quality. The sole purpose of these sites and of many directories is to act as a link conduit, the power of which the owners use to increase ranking to the sites which they target. WOTARTIST does not seek to promote any site apart from itself and does not have external links with that purpose.

We tried adding a bookmark feature to Wotwebsite but couldn't find a working cross-browser compatible version. We tried adding a tell a friend link to each website listing on our site, but we succumbed to the inevitable reality that these are often abused by spammers and dropped the idea. We thought of adding an individual website hit counter to each listing but came to the conclusion that it was to gimmicky, too much unnecessary info. The Internet and website design and planning is a strange beast, it invites us into a world where we get drugged and high on the adventure of possibility only to be brought down to reality once again as one inevitably re-focuses on what it is one is trying to achieve.

Maybe we are slow or does the Internet experience twist our minds, contort our judgment to such a degree that it takes time to realise that to go to the local shop is a lot easier on foot, than to create some weird hybrid monster with numerous functions that will get us there, yes, but two years too late. You have to give things a go though - just once!

The other day an Italian friend asked me what WOTARTIST stood for. I am not sure an explanation is necessary as you either get it or you don't, and that is pretty much dependant on if you are English or not! The title of our site simply doesn't translate, but it doesn't need to either.

The written text on WOTARTIST has been deliberately kept to an absolute minimum, but what there is, we are in the process of having translated into several other languages, namely Spanish, Italian and French and German.

How frustrating and limited must the Internet experience be to non-English speakers! Well WOTARTIST is making its small contribution to addressing this!

Just an update about whats going on at Wotartist. Well, finding time to make some major changes has been tricky but we are getting there. Artists can now have free art portfolio pages and we have extended our artist submitted tips section. Running any website is a time consuming business but one as large as ours is pretty straining on our resources. Have I painted a picture myself recently? well no is the answer, but I live in hope! The thing is once you start a public project such as Wotartist you really have to carry it through to its natural conclusion. We have had to learn asp coding and pay some programmers to do the stuff we cannot manage ourselves. Free is the key to all community projects and that allows us to maintain the quality of art that we exhibit.

Looking around the Internet today one cannot help to marvel at the inventiveness of so many of the ideas and applications which are in full blossom. Many though do strike me as falling into "Gadget" categories. Clever little ideas that you think at first glance, clever sod if only I could have thought of that. But just like its shadow, on second thought you think, do I really need it? Do I need such a multi -functional Internet? Do I have time to go to a site, for example,that will text me to remind me to take a prescription medicine at certain times, or am I so hopelessly inadequate that I cannot do I myself!

I remember when I started creating my first websites how I was enthralled with the power of JavaScript code to preform clever little visual acrobatics and must have tried every single one I could find. Thankfully those days are over and thank goodness I saw through the cheap thrill of them and stopped. I am not JavaScript bashing here as I do use it a lot, but simply pointing out that function must always be servile to the big picture.

WOTARTIST was not conceived of as a way to solve a problem that didn't exist nor to imagine ways to do things more easily than the fashion to which one was already accustomed. It is not some marvel of programming either, nor some invention to change the world, it is a site founded exclusively on the solution to one very simple little problem inherent to most art directories. How to maximize the number of images and websites that one can browse on any one page without having to trawl through page upon page? and without compromising download times when many images are involved. My patience for slow loading pages or pages with awkward navigation is probably like most users of the Internet - very short.

What remains the most powerful attraction of the Internet is the speed and accessibility of information. However attractive "gadget" websites can be, they will come and go. The quality of the internet's content when the dust settles will come under scrutiny and the democracy of exposure that to a certain degree the Internet offers us all, may make room in the future for a gradual redress in favour of the substance and quality of content.

WOTARTIST'S second raison d’être was the determination to exhibit only the best artists currently exhibiting on the Internet. Try a Google search for "good art", or "the best art", and it will return some wildly off the mark results. Simple put, the only way to find the best artists is to search for them. Google it seems uses some human edited directories for its results, and in doing so reveals weaknesses in its algorithms for which it is clear a solution is not readily at hand. So it was left to us if we wanted to show the best artist to do the gruelling work, the hours of searching and selecting of the best and most varied art that we could find.
